2021 Design Trend Forecast

As 2020 comes to a close, we reflect on what this year has brought us. The past twelve months prompted us to return to our roots and reinvent what 'home' meant to us. With so much additional time spent at home, it was inevitable for people to evaluate the space they spent so much time in and begin to make improvements, and we are excited to see how that transitions into 2021.

Here are some of the predictions for the hottest upcoming design trends from industry experts.

Plants!

With so much of our year spent within the confines of our homes, it is no surprise that people want to surround themselves with some fresh decor. Incorporating indoor plants is a great way to revitalize your home and brighten your mood. Here are some easy-to-care-for indoor plants for those of us who might not have developed a green thumb during quarantine. If caring for plants really isn't your thing, try opting for some of these artificial plants; they won't die, no matter how hard you try!

Natural Light

Finding creative ways to make our homes more calming and relaxing is at the top of the list for 2021. Maximizing the amount of natural light in a room can dramatically increase how calming and relaxing the space is. By swapping the heavy, dark, or patterned curtains and drapes for brighter, less opaque options, you can easily enhance the natural light making the room feel bigger and more fresh. If you need some inspiration, here are some ideas on how to dress up your windows while keeping it bright!

Outdoor spaces built to use year-round

As temperatures change and the need to relax and rewind at home continues, refreshing these often overlooked outdoor spaces has become a priority. Regardless of whether you have ample room in your backyard or are confined to a small porch or balcony, shifting your focus to this area and adding a few improvements can transform even the smallest of spaces to a tranquil retreat at home. Industry experts anticipate a dramatic increase in the demand for fire pits and outdoor fireplaces, which can help make these outdoor areas comfortable even in the colder months. Extending the living spaces in your home to the outdoors is a great way to keep things exciting and help you feel less cramped no matter how many square feet of indoors you have. There is nothing like a deep breath of fresh, crisp air after spending more time than usual inside. See these 10 tips for making your outdoor space usable year-round.

Multi-Functional Spaces

With so many people working or learning from home, it is smart to create a space that can be used for a variety of activities. Industry experts have seen a shift in design for creative storage solutions and workspace furniture. By creating versatile pieces, a room's functionality is limitless and makes smaller spaces seem more useful. Adding additional storage for work or school supplies is a great way to change the room, depending on your need. Earth Tones

As 2021 quickly approaches, color experts at Sherwin Williams, PPG, and Pantone released their color palettes for 2021. To determine these, teams of color experts consider what is going on in the world and what is to come, choosing hues that depict this story as accurately as possible. All three companies have returned to Earth tones to set the mood for 2021. Sherwin Williams, who has announced their color of the year is Urbane Bronze, states, "...this warm hue draws from nature for a feeling of relaxation and serenity." which echoes the same sentiment as PPG and Pantone, who used earthy influences to select their colors. It is clear that with the year we have had, we see the need to connect to nature and bring calm, serene elements into our spaces.

2021 is right around the corner, and there is much to look forward to, especially when it comes to the home. Whether you are sprucing up your current living space or moving to a new house, adding touches that improve the feeling of serenity and calmness can drastically transform a room for the better!
